There are a quite a few differences that there could be. For one, Mr. Shiflet might have had a fake arm. the car would have been a newer one and lucynell would have gotten a trained mechanic to fix it possibly. also, her daughter might hav not been deaf due to the new technology. and mr shiflet might not have been able to make away with the car very far before getting caught
There are some differences in this story that is set back in the 1940's and there wouuld be in the 2000's. For example, Lucynell could have learned sign language instead of not being able to talk, Mr. Shiflet could have gotten help for his arm, and instead of Mr. Shiflet having to fix the car they could of taken it to the shop and had it fixed.
Maybe if it was a modern day story then Lucynell wouldnt have been so trusting of Mr. Shiflet, she would have been a bit more careful about intrusting here daughters life to Mr. Shiflet
A lot of things would be different. For example, Mr. Shiflet would probably have a fake arm, Lucynell would have fake teeth, and the care would go faster then thirty miles an hour.
If it were set in a moderen-day city, there would be several differences. Mr. Shiflet may have never even come across them dew to it just being a whole different world. Lucynell, the daughter, might have been able to communicate better with others by having special help with her problem.
If the story was set in the modern day, and not in the 1940's, the changes would be very dramatic. For instance, the old Lucynell probably wouldn't have hired Mr. Shiftlet because nowadays it is hard to trust a random person off of the street. Lucynell also wouldn't be quite so uneducated, because now we have programs and schools for the handicapped. Also, I highly doubt Mr. Shiftlet would have married Lucynell, even if the old woman did let him, because in the modern times, marraige isn't considered a rite of passage. In the 1940's, men were expected to find a nice girl and settle down. However, these days people have a different idea.
Mr. Shiflet would not have believed he knew more about the human heart and blood, the car would have already been fixed, Mr. Shiflet would have had a fake arm. Lucynell would have been able to communicate more than what she knew, and the grandmother probably would not have been quite as trusting.
If the story was written in modern times, the mother probly wouldn't have even trusted him. Also, there is more technology and there would be proof that they got married. Also todays world would be a little more violent. Mr. Shiftlet would have probly had a weapon on him.
